We have been learning about the launch of the Flex wireless tool as a new product and have been impressed by what we have seen so far. One of the questions we always try to answer in every review is “Where does Flex fit?” When we took a closer look at the Flex 24V brushless cordless 5-inch angle grinder, we were deeply moved.
Flex designed their first cordless grinder with a maximum speed of 10,000 RPM. This is quite high, and they have designed four electronic speed settings to help you control the speed if you need to lower the speed.
However, the speed is only impressive when the tool can withstand the load. We tried various cutting, grinding and polishing to see how it compares with other 5-inch cordless grinders we have used.
The power level at this level is impressive. We were able to get the wheel into trouble as we moved forward, but it remained stable like any other model we used in the 5-inch class. When we turned our attention from cutting 1/4 inch angle iron to grinding away some top layers, we were impressed by the speed at which it removed material. Switch to the clamshell tray, it left us with a beautiful polished luster.
We used the 5.0Ah battery in the kit for most of the tests, and we recommend that you stick to it. Once we use it up, we put it on the charger, it does not require any cooling time before starting to charge. We switch to a 2.5Ah battery, which is obviously easier to get the wheels into trouble. You can enjoy lighter weight in the lightest missions, but stick to the 5.0Ah pack when you enter medium and heavy missions.
Compared with many small angle grinders, Flex has a slimmer handle design, which is a move we like. Combined with overmolding at all suitable positions, it can provide a firm grip when you grind and cut at various angles.
Compared with large angle grinders, one of the advantages of small angle grinders is weight reduction. Without batteries and side handles, this model weighs 4.3 pounds, and it weighs 6.4 pounds with a 5.0Ah battery.
There are two types of Flex grinders. They are almost the same except how you use the power supply. The model we are reviewing has a toggle switch. The other uses an on/off slide switch.
This Flex cordless grinder makes it very easy to adjust the guard. Just rotate it counterclockwise (if you look down from the top) until it reaches the position you are looking for. To remove it, rotate it so that the shield protrudes directly from the tool, and you will feel it loose to a position where it can be replaced.
In the Flex world, Shockshield is their term for vibration suppression. In this case, it is located on the side handle. There is a separation near where it is connected to the tool, which can dampen some vibrations before reaching your hand.
Flex includes a recoil sensor on the tool. If you bind the grinding wheel or it bounces on you, the motor will automatically stop. Despite this control, there is no rapid electronic brake when you release the switch. It takes about 2.5 seconds for the 27 wheel to stop, so it is not as slow as some.
