Makita XAG26 18V Cordless X-Lock Angle Grinder Review

The Makita 18V LXT cordless X-Lock angle grinder has reliable performance, intelligent design and the convenience of X-Lock interface, which can handle the work of your small angle grinder. This is a good start, but we are a little greedy. We would love to see this production line expand to cordless medium and large angle grinders. With the launch of Makita’s XGT system, we hope it will be released soon!
We are very happy to get the first Makita 18V LXT cordless X-Lock angle grinder (XAG26). Two other options (one cordless and one corded) are introduced, which add X-Lock’s easy-to-use wheel replacement system to Makita’s thoughtful design.
The maximum speed of the Makita XAG26 grinder is 8500 RPM. If you have been using this model, it will best match the XAG20 (or XAG21 with AWS). However, it is a single speed design, not a variable speed design.
We did all kinds of cutting, sanding and polishing to see what kind of work we can accomplish. The brushless motor does a good job of maintaining high speed, because we cut the notch from the 3/8 inch angle iron, which can effectively grind the problematic area. Where it really shines-literally-is how fast it cleans our angle irons with wire cup brushes and flaps.
There is definitely a difference between this and some higher voltage cordless grinders, but remember that this is a 4 1/2 to 5 inch grinder. Of course, its power will be lower than a 6-inch angle grinder. If you are looking for an equivalent wired power supply, then this is a good match for the 8A to 9A level grinders.
Obviously, a major design feature of this Makita wireless angle grinder is the X-Lock wheel interface. If this is a new concept to you, then it is a hands-free, tool-free locking system for fixing the grinding wheel. To release the wheel, pull the lever at the top, and it will drop the wheel.
This operation will also keep the X-Lock interface open to accept the next wheel. You can push the grinder down onto the wheels, but we found it easier to eject it by hand. When you press the roller on the X-Lock mechanism, it clicks enough to be heard and held tightly under hearing protection.
If you have other Makita grinders (or any other brand) with standard 5/8 inch spindles, please don’t worry about 2 different grinding wheel styles in stock. X-Lock wheels fit standard spindles. However, you cannot make standard grinding wheels on the X-Lock grinding machine.
Makita XAG26 is a brake grinder. When you release the paddle switch, it electronically controls the brushless motor to stop quickly—in less than 2 seconds.
This model does not have a lock switch. If you remove your hand from the paddle switch or put down the grinder, the brake will activate and stop it. If you prefer to lock the switch, please use XAG25 instead to get this feature.
Makita also developed AFT and used it in the XAG26 grinder. It stands for active feedback sensing technology, if the wheel gets stuck or stopped for any reason, the wheel is stopped.
Finally, there is anti-restart protection. If you happen to insert the battery and still have the paddle switch engaged, the motor will not spin until you turn the switch off first.
When the battery already has battery level indicators, I usually do not point them out. However, the indicator light on the battery points down, and Makita has added a 3-LED indicator light on the top, so you can easily see it without turning the tool. This is a small matter, but we are grateful. Just press the switch and it will light up.
The Makita XAG26 X-Lock angle grinder is smaller and lighter. It is only 14 3/4 inches long, and its circumference makes it easy for the barrel to find a comfortable grip.
Without batteries and side handles, XAG26 weighs 4.6 pounds. Add 5.0Ah batteries to make it weigh less than 6 pounds.

If you want the Makita XAG26 with a toggle switch, the bare metal price is $179-the same price as the XAG20 with a standard spindle. If you prefer to lock the switch, the price of XAG25 is $159. There are currently no kit options, these are the only Makita cordless grinders with an X-Lock interface at the time of writing.
Makita also has a full range of X-Lock accessories, allowing you to easily shop with your favorite Makita dealers.

Out of curiosity, why is this score lower than flex, when this has “no obvious shortcomings” and flex does?
